Ordo Sonic+ review

The Ordo Sonic+ Toothbrush offers a high-quality design and great brushing results, without the usual high price.

Check price

The Ordo Sonic+ Toothbrush is one of the first examples of an electric toothbrush which offers all the power of sonic vibrations in a premium design while keeping the price far lower than the competition. This is a direct competitor to the Philips Sonicare toothbrush range, undercutting similar models on price while trying to maintain quality.

To be clear, this isn’t as good as the Philips premium models, a fact reflected in the price. However, it does still offer a lot more than a standard toothbrush – and even many electric toothbrushes – while being affordable.

So if all the bells and whistles of the high-end models just seem like useless extras, then this could be the option that suits you perfectly.

Ordo Sonic+

Budget

A very affordable way to get a fully functional sonic toothbrush that offers gentle control, looks great, features a long battery life and offers a subscription head replacement system, making the job of maintaining your brush (and teeth) easier than ever. You may need to sacrifice some of the smarter features available from the competition, like app connectivity and many vibration types, but if they’re unnecessary extras to you anyway, this could be the perfect pick.

Who’s this for?

Those who want the cleaning power of a sonic toothbrush, but without the extra features that make competing products that bit more expensive.

Our likes and dislikes

  • High-quality design
  • Affordable price
  • Gentle cleaning
  • Long battery life
  • No travel case
  • No pressure sensor

Expect to pay

RRP: £49.99 Prices start at £49.99 for the brush and charger, but we’ve seen it go as low as £39.99. Or go for the Starter Kit at £74.99, with the following extras: shaver socket adapter, 18 x Interdentals, toothpaste, travel toothpaste, reusable mouthwash bottle, mouthwash concentrate, floss.

There are lots of colours to pick from on this well-designed toothbrush, allowing you to find the ideal match for your bathroom decor. From mint green and rose gold to charcoal grey and the pearl violet model tested here, the many choices all offer a premium finish.

But with slower sonic vibration than some Philips models, at 40,000 sonic pulses per minute versus 60,000, and some useful features like a pressure sensor lacking here, is it worth stretching to the higher end model? This review aims to find out.

How we review

We reviewed this toothbrush for an extended period of use, twice daily. It was also taken away on trips to test its portability. All the settings were tried and evaluated throughout use.

Ordo Sonic+ Setup

Easy, with a premium touch

Set-up for the Ordo Sonic+ Toothbrush couldn’t be easier. In fact it’s a pleasure. From the start, even the delivery box encasing the brush box has playful messages as it guides you where to tear.

Opening the box itself involves holding it as the bottom part slides perfectly out. It may sound silly but it felt like a special part of the set-up – a detail that’s often reserved for only the most pricey of products.

Inside you have a simple set-up of the toothbrush body, toothbrush head, head cover, charger base and its USB cable. What you don’t get is an adapter, meaning not only will you not be able to plug it into your two-pin bathroom socket but you won’t be able to wall-charge it unless you have a USB adapter already.

Thankfully, these are available for most devices and even on computers, so you probably can charge it. But it would have been nice to have that thrown in so you have a dedicated plug.

There’s no travel case, although you do get a toothbrush head plastic cover for added protection should you need to pop the unit in a washbag. That works fine, although given the lovely painted finish, it would be a shame to leave a scratch mark on the brush when travelling.

The brush arrives with charge right out of the box, so you can pop the head on, tap the button and get brushing straight away (although an initial charge may be a good idea to make sure you’re fully juiced up and ready for the long haul).

Ordo Sonic+ Design

High-quality design, small brush head

The design quality of the Ordo Sonic+ Toothbrush far exceeds its price point. From that fancy packaging already mentioned to the quality of the paint finish and colour, it all feels high-end. The brush itself is solidly made with a minimal design that not only makes it easy to use, with a single button, but also looks fantastic.

Everything has an IPX7 waterproof rating, so you don’t need to fret about getting any part of this toothbrush wet and can keep it clean with a thorough rinse under the tap. The brush heads are also high-quality, with individually rounded bristles which work to get into those deeper areas of the mouth.

The brush has been designed with dentists, so it has professional approval, which can be a nice thing to know for peace of mind. But it’s also very practical – it will work with a range of dental work, including braces, bridges and so on.

On the front is a single button which can be pressed once to start and again to stop. Or keep pressing to cycle through the four brush modes available to use. Whichever one you pick there is an automatic two-minute timer which is split into four chunks, so you know when to move on to the next section of your mouth every 30 seconds, thanks to a pause in the vibrations.

As mentioned, this brush tops out at 40,000 sonic pulses per minute. It’s slower than the Philips premium competition, at 62,000, but that may not be a bad thing as it does make for a gentler and quieter clean, but more on that in the next section.

It’s also worth noting that the brush head this model comes with is relatively small. As such it can be a good option for those that find other models a bit too large, or anyone that wants more accuracy in their control of reaching each area of the mouth that may need particular attention.

Ordo Sonic+ Cleaning performance

Ideal for sensitive gums or teeth

Everything about the Ordo Sonic+ Toothbrush is subtle, from the minimal design to the slight price. And that continues in the brushing, thanks to the smaller than average brush head, which is also softer than most. Plus, those sonic vibrations are quieter and less powerful than other electric toothbrushes.

All that could be a bad thing if you’re the type of person that wants ultimate power to clean hard and strong. But if you prefer a brush that is a little more gentle yet still allows you accuracy in your control – this is ideal.

You can brush more gently, which is ideal for anyone who has sensitive gums or teeth and wants to get as clean as possible without force.

There’s no pressure sensor to let you know if you’re brushing too hard. But with that softer head, this is also less necessary. There is also a Sensitive mode, so if you want to be even more gentle, that is an option too.

The small head and long brush bristles make for a very adept way of brushing, allowing you to get into smaller areas. This leaves a noticeably clean space between teeth, much like after a hygienist visit when you may notice just how much the gaps are there when you feel them with your tongue – before they get filled back in with plaque over time. The brush also makes for a great option if you have a bridge or braces and want to work around the metal to get the teeth behind as clean as possible.

Ordo Sonic+ Usability

Four modes and an automatic timer

The Ordo Sonic+ Toothbrush is very, very easy to use, thanks to its simple options. You have the choice of four modes: Clean, White, Massage and Sensitive.

There is very little difference between Clean and White, as far as we could tell, but Massage is a sort of pulsing mode which could be useful for gums and tongue cleaning. Sensitive is subtle but still offers enough power to feel you’re getting teeth fresh, just without much force.

All that is easily done by using the single button start/stop button, although the brush automatically switches off after the two-minute timer is done. Want more? Just tap it on again and carry on – something we found useful when moving on to tongue brushing at the end.

The dock is easy to use, with a wireless connection that allows you to drop the brush into the collar and leave. This works well but can build up residue if you don’t dry the brush after use.

Helpfully the outer collar is removable so you can wipe down the charger base with ease. A red LED lights up when charging and turns off when done.

Ordo Sonic+ Battery life

Three weeks between charges

The Ordo Sonic+ Toothbrush may be quieter and less powerful than the Philips competition but it lasts longer as a result. This will get you a good three weeks of use twice daily. You can even make that a month in some cases, depending on how you brush and what modes you use.

The company says a full charge gets you 84 minutes of brushing. Based on that two-minute timer used twice daily, that’s four minutes per day, giving you 21 days of use.

We found the brush actually lasted longer in real-world use – but as with all battery-based gadgets, you can expect that to degrade over time.

Drop the brush into the dock and you’ll need to wait a massive 16 hours for a full charge, so more than just overnight then. Since this likely only needs doing once a month, it’s not a massive issue, but you will need to charge overnight, brush in the morning and drop back in the dock for the day, to get that full charge.

Ordo Sonic+ Value

Excellent value for money

The Ordo Sonic+ Toothbrush is one of the best value-for-money electric toothbrush options you can buy right now. Not only does it offer a premium quality design and build but also gets you sonic vibrations for a super deep clean.

Cleverly, the company has opted to go for a more gentle clean, which allows this to compete with more expensive brushes while offering longer battery life, a quieter experience and more subtle brush control.

Ongoing costs are also reasonable, with the option to pay for subscriptions to get replacement heads and more as needed. The basic Refill Plan, as it’s called, will cost you £10 and gets you a new brush head as well as large and travel-sized toothpastes. Usefully, you can select how often you want to be sent these (every month, two months or three months), based on how quickly you wear down the head.

There is also a £15 Refill Pack, which gets you the above plus mouthwash concentrate, interdental brushes and mint floss. A one-off brush head will set you back £5.

Ordo Sonic+ Final verdict

A fantastic, stripped-back brush

The Ordo Sonic+ Toothbrush is a fantastic example of an electric toothbrush from a company that has stripped back all the unnecessary extras and focused on a premium quality design and build. As such you get a low price which still affords you the benefits of a sonic toothbrush, ideal for plaque removal and whitening, without too many complicated features.

The smaller head and subtler brushing power makes for a gentle and quiet experience that’s ideal for anyone with sensitive gums or those with bridges or braces that need to be worked around.

The brush looks great and does come with a head cover but you won’t get a travel case and there’s no pressure sensor. All that said, this still justifies that price, with the end result of very clean teeth with minimal effort.
